What is on-device AI, and why does it change everything?
On-device AI explained: how neural networks run on phone hardware, what it means for privacy, speed and offline use, and which apps do it well.
The two ways AI can run
Most AI today is cloud AI: your device sends a request, a data center does the thinking, and the answer streams back. On-device AI puts the neural network itself on your phone - the 'brain' lives in your hand, not in a server rack. The difference is architectural, not a setting.
How phones became AI machines
Modern phone chips include dedicated neural accelerators (NPUs), plus fast CPUs and GPUs. Compression techniques - quantization - shrink models to a fraction of their size while keeping most of their ability. A 2-billion-parameter model that needed a server in 2023 runs comfortably on a mid-range phone today.
What you gain
Privacy by physics: nothing to intercept. Speed: no network round-trip. Reliability: it works with zero bars. Cost: no subscription to a hosted model. The honest trade-off is capability - the biggest models still live in data centers - but for chat, documents, stories and tools, a pocket model is already surprisingly good.
