The fewer permissions, the fewer questions

Many AI apps want your contacts, location and mic access before they will answer anything. An on-device AI has little to ask permission for.

The prompts nobody reads

Install a typical app and the requests start immediately: contacts, precise location, microphone, photos, files and media. Each is a small door into your data, and most people tap Allow because the app refuses to work otherwise - which is exactly the leverage being used. Over months, those small doors quietly add up to a fairly detailed map of your life.

Why cloud apps want so much

Some requests are legitimate - voice input needs the mic, photo questions need the gallery. The deeper issue is where the data goes afterward: prompts, uploads and usage patterns travel to company servers, and 'we may use your data to improve our services' has become a standard line in privacy policies. Broad permissions are the toll booth on the way to your information.

Offline changes the equation

An on-device AI shrinks the whole problem by design. Local AI runs its models entirely on the phone: no account, no sign-in, no server relationship to feed. When nothing is uploaded, there is simply less data for an app to want - its reasons for asking shrink accordingly, and airplane mode becomes a reasonable daily setting rather than a punishment.

A simple rule of thumb

The habit worth building: before granting anything, ask whether the feature truly needs it. An AI that chats, reads photos and answers voice questions fully offline sets a useful benchmark - if that much is possible with so little access, it is fair to wonder why other apps insist on so much more before they will even show you a single answer.
