The first thing a disaster takes

When hurricanes, earthquakes or wildfires arrive, the phone network is often the first casualty: towers lose power, backhaul floods, and the surviving cells choke on everyone's simultaneous calls. The devices in our pockets stay perfectly functional computers - they simply lose the infrastructure layer they were built to depend on. Communication after a disaster means moving data with no infrastructure at all.

A link built from light and sound

MorseLink takes an old idea seriously: two phones linking directly through light and sound - one transmitting messages as visible flashes and audio tones, the other watching and listening to decode them. There is no cell network, no router, no internet in the path. If the phones can see or hear each other, a message can cross the gap between them.

Engineering for a noisy world

Raw beeps are fragile, so the app wraps every message in serious plumbing: AI compression shrinks the text so it transmits quickly, Reed-Solomon forward error correction rebuilds data lost to glare or background noise, and encryption keeps the content private while the flashes remain visible. It is the same discipline radio engineers have always used - assume the channel is hostile, design anyway.

Honest limits and real uses

Keep the lane in mind: light-and-sound links are short-range - across a room, a street, between buildings - not satellite phones. For neighbor check-ins after a quake, coordinating with family members when towers are congested, or passing messages through a blackout, a link that needs nothing beats a perfect one that needs everything. Practice it before the emergency, not during.
