Why morse refuses to die

Morse code has outlived the telegraph, the wire and most of the technologies built to replace it, for one simple reason: it assumes almost nothing. Any channel that can carry an on and an off - sound, light, even taps on a pipe - can carry a message through. When complex systems fail, the simple one is the one left standing.

The phone version of a telegraph

Classic morse was human-speed and error-prone; the phone version is properly engineered instead. AI compression packs text into the smallest possible signal, Reed-Solomon error correction reconstructs the pulses a receiver missed through glare or background noise, and encryption keeps content private even though the flashes happen in plain sight. Same idea as 1844 - just considerably better arithmetic doing the work.

Practice before it matters

A survival skill is only a skill if you have used it, so drill while nothing is wrong: pass messages across the yard, through a power outage, between two phones in airplane mode for the full effect.
